EU regulations increase restrictions on chemicals in food products across dairy industry

The spotlight is currently focused on the global dairy market. The UK industry focus in particular has been on the developments associated with milk prices but we don’t want to lose sight of other changes that have taken place. EU regulations on the 12th August 2015 have seen the reduction in permitted levels of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QAC) in food products across the dairy industry. Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) has been lowered from 0.5mg/kg to 0.1mg/kg, which has raised a number of questions between customers and suppliers.

QAC are a group of compounds found in various dairy disinfectants that include didecyldimethylammonium (DDAC) and benzalkonium (BAC). Some of the brand name products that you might find these compounds in include parlour and dairy cleaning chemicals, teat/udder wipes and footbath solutions. As a supplier of these products to our customer base we wanted to outline the regulations now in place and provide peace of mind to those who might be concerned at QAC levels in the products we sell.

Firstly, we recommend that you double check your data sheets for any products that we have mentioned above and immediately remove anything containing QAC’s from your business. We also recommend seeking advice if you are unsure or need to source an alternative range of products, and our McCaskie Agriculture team are on hand to help should you need it.

We have reached out to our own product suppliers and have received confirmation that all dairy cleaning products and teat sprays we stock are free from QAC. Our team can provide you with any additional paperwork that you require to give you peace of mind and provide additional proof of compliance to your milk buyers.
