Electric Fencing for Livestock
Rutland energisers, netting, wire, tape, posts, reels and insulators, stocked at Ayr, Kinross, Lanark & Stirling. The whole job usually comes down to choosing the right energiser.
The Energiser Is the Decision
Everything else on an electric fence is consumable. The energiser is the bit that decides whether the fence works in August when the grass is up the wire, and it is the bit people most often buy a size too small.
Five things decide which one you need, and none of them is the acreage:
- How long the fence line is — not the field boundary, the actual run of wire, including every strand if you are running more than one.
- How much vegetation will touch it — the single biggest drain, and the reason a fence that worked in April fails in July.
- What you are containing — a dairy cow that respects a single wire is a different job from lambs, or from keeping a badger out.
- What the fence is made of — wire, tape, rope and netting do not conduct alike, and neither do wet and dry ground.
- What power you have — mains, dry battery, wet battery, dual power or solar.
Rutland — part of Kerbl — make energisers in all five power types, and their range runs from a small portable unit to mains energisers for permanent boundaries. The rest of the range covers batteries, netting, wire, tape, rope, reels, mounting posts, poly and grazing posts, gate handles, insulators and Gripple systems.
Bring the fence, not the field. Tell us the metres of wire, the number of strands, what stock, what conductor and what power, and we will size the energiser to it. An energiser bought one size up is cheap; a fence that stops holding in July is not.
Electric Fencing Questions
How do I choose an electric fence energiser?
By the length of wire rather than the acreage — then by how much vegetation will touch the fence, what stock you are containing, what conductor you are using, and what power source you have. Vegetation is the biggest single drain and the usual reason a fence that worked in spring fails in summer.
What power options do electric fence energisers come in?
Mains, dry battery, wet battery, dual powered and solar charged. Which suits depends on how permanent the fence is and how far it is from a supply.
