Beyond the Machine
Time is your most valuable asset. Every system we design, fit and look after exists to help you keep more of it.
Time Is Your Most Valuable Asset
The future of farming is not about replacing people with machines. It is about giving you the time, the insight and the support to focus on what actually matters.
A robot is not a machine for milking cows. It is a way of handing back the hours that fixed milking times take off you — the unsociable ones, the ones you cannot spend anywhere else. The same is true of a feed pusher, a footbath that doses itself, or a rep who spots a slow drinker in a calf pen before it becomes a vet bill.
Every system we put on a farm is judged on that. Not on the specification sheet, and not on what it can do in a brochure — on whether it takes away uncertainty and gives you back control.
The Hardware Is the Easy Part
At McCaskie, automation is only the beginning. We design, install and support complete dairy systems.
The manufacturer provides the hardware. We provide the context, the expertise and the reassurance — your shed, your herd, your labour, your layout, and somebody who answers when it stops on a Sunday.
Anybody can sell you a machine. What decides whether it earns its keep is everything around it: where it sits, how the cows reach it, how the services run to it, who commissions it, and who comes back to it in year six.
We do not build the machines. What we design is the system they go into — the layout, the flow and the building — and then we install it, prove it and look after it. Five stages, and only one of them is the day the lorry arrives.
Five Stages, One Team
Concept
An engineer comes to the farm. Not to measure up, at this point, but to look at the building you have, the stock you keep and the way the work actually runs. Most of what makes an installation good or bad is decided here, before a single price is mentioned.
Blueprint
A layout drawn for your building: where the plant sits, how stock moves in and out, where water, power and drainage have to reach. Drawn against the shed that is there, including the awkward corner of it, rather than against an ideal one from a catalogue.
Installation
Our own engineers fit it. Most jobs go into working buildings, around milkings and feeding, and we will say straight out if a stage needs the shed cleared or a quiet window rather than discover it on the day.
Testing
Nothing is handed over until it has been proved. Settings are made and checked, and whoever is going to use it every day is walked through it while an engineer is still standing there.
Servicing
Planned maintenance, parts and call-out from the same team, for as long as you have the kit. The engineer who fitted it is the engineer who comes back to it. That is the stage that outlasts all the others.
Two Halves of the Same Business
What sets McCaskie apart is not only the technology we supply, but the ecosystem of people, products and services that surrounds it.
The engineering team
Robotic and conventional milking, cooling, slurry, ventilation and feeding. They design the system around the building, install it, commission it and come back to it — eight engineers, working from Springkerse in Stirling.
The field sales team
Feeds, medicines and herd health, on farm. They do not just sell: they watch how calves drink, how a group is growing, how your team handles the animals, and they read the small signs before they become problems.
What surrounds both
Hygiene, monitoring, nutrition and the advice that ties them together. A parlour sits inside a wider system of herd health, feeding and labour, and it is judged on how well it fits that — not on its own.
Our 65+ years of experience comes with every product, every visit and every solution we provide. That is not a slogan about the past; it is why a rep can tell you a feeding routine is drifting from the way the calves are standing, and why an engineer can tell you a shed will not suit a robot before you have spent anything finding out.
Installation Is Only the Beginning
A robotic system is worth what it is worth only if it keeps running. That is a service question, not a sales one.
Routine maintenance
Planned visits, so the machine is looked at before it goes wrong rather than after.
Remote monitoring
Alerts reaching us as well as you, so a problem can be recognised before it has cost you a milking.
Rapid-response call-out
24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Our own engineers, not an answering service taking a message for the morning.
Our engineers do not just install systems; they build relationships with farms. More than ten years with Fullwood and more than 90 Merlin robots installed means the person who arrives at four in the morning has almost certainly seen your fault before. That is what automating peace of mind actually means — not that nothing goes wrong, but that you are not on your own when it does.
Why the Answer Is Sometimes No
Not every farm is ready for robotic milking, and not every farm needs to be. If a well-planned conventional parlour is the right answer for your building and your labour, that is what we will tell you — and we will tell you before you have spent anything finding out.
We can afford to say it. As the leading Fullwood dealer in Scotland, we do not need to sell a robot to every farm we visit, and the robots we do put in are the ones our own engineers service for years afterwards. A dealer who recommends a robot to everybody is a salesman. We would rather say "not your shed" now than fit a machine that never fills its day.
We will say no to a shed that does not suit one
Cow flow, building shape and labour all decide it, and some sheds are wrong for a robot no matter what the budget is.
We will not quote off a plan
Nothing is priced until somebody has stood in the building.
We will tell you what it needs
If the job wants more power, more water or a wall moved, you hear it at the blueprint stage, not the week the lorry comes.
A Family Business, Still
McCaskie has supported Scottish farmers since 1957, and the engineering department has been fitting and servicing plant for a long stretch of that.
Four country stores at Ayr, Kinross, Lanark and Stirling, a field sales team, and an engineering department working from Springkerse in Stirling across the whole of Scotland, on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Eight engineers. More than ten years working with Fullwood, and more than 90 Merlin robots installed in that time.
Two printed brochures carry the same argument in full — Beyond the Machine, and the McCaskie Dairy Brochure. Ask any of our engineers, any rep or the Stirling office for a hard copy.
Questions We Are Asked Most
What does Beyond the Machine actually mean?
That the machine is the easy part, and that your time is what we are actually selling you. The manufacturer provides the hardware; McCaskie provides the context, the expertise and the reassurance — the layout, the flow, the building, and somebody who comes back to it. Five stages, and only one of them is the delivery.
Do McCaskie make the equipment?
No. The manufacturers build the hardware. McCaskie design the system around your farm, supply it, install it, commission it and service it. That distinction matters, and we would rather be straight about it.
Will you tell me if a robot is the wrong answer for my farm?
Yes, and we do. The robots we fit are the ones our own engineers service for years afterwards, so the wrong one would be our problem too. If a well-planned conventional parlour suits your building better, that is what you will hear.
Is Beyond the Machine only about engineering?
No. McCaskie is built on two strengths, engineering and animal health, and the same argument applies to both. A field sales rep who notices a slow drinker at the teat or a pen growing unevenly is doing exactly what an engineer does when they look at cow flow before quoting: reading the farm rather than the product.
Who services the kit once it is in?
The same engineers who fitted it, from Springkerse in Stirling, across the whole of Scotland. Ring 01786 474 481 or email service@mccaskie.co.uk. The out-of-hours call-out numbers are on the service page.
How long has McCaskie been doing this?
The business was established in 1957 and is still family run, with four country stores at Ayr, Kinross, Lanark and Stirling alongside the engineering department and the field sales team. Our 65+ years of experience comes with every product, every visit and every solution we provide.
Can I get Beyond the Machine as a printed brochure?
Yes, and there are two: Beyond the Machine, and the McCaskie Dairy Brochure. Ask any engineer, any field sales rep or the Stirling office and we will get them to you.
